Jim Parham is a North Carolina native and author of more than a dozen trail guides covering the Southern Appalachians. His latest book, Wildflower Walks + Hikes: North Carolina Mountains, explored where to find native plants in bloom throughout WNC.
“My goal was to go beyond a basic wildflower guide,” says Parham. “I wanted to delve into the different forest types, which are the key to understanding where wildflowers thrive and when they bloom — from grassy balds and rich coves to spruce-fir forests and high-elevation rock outcrops — and show hikers how to get to them. If you know where to go and when, it’s almost impossible not to see wildflowers at their peak.”
The interactive presentation will touch on information in the book:
- 59 routes ranging from easy strolls on quiet walkways to longer treks into the backcountry, all on public lands
- Destinations including Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Pisgah National Forest, Nantahala National Forest, Dupont State Forest, and more
- 13 different forest types and the flowers that thrive there, plus advice for hikers just starting out, and over 300 color wildflower photos
